How to Run Your Pub Quiz with Shalose
Choose your categories
Pick three to six topics from the twelve available. A good mix might be General Knowledge, History, Music and Film & TV — enough variety that every player has at least one round where they can shine.
Set up your teams
Add two to four teams and give each one a name. The built-in scorecard tracks points automatically throughout the quiz. Aim for two to five players per team for the best dynamic.
Read questions aloud
The quizmaster reads each question from the screen. Give teams 20 to 30 seconds to discuss and write down their answer — the built-in timer helps keep pace.
Flip to reveal the answer
Tap Flip to turn the card over and show the correct answer. Award points by tapping the winning team's name. Shalose keeps the running total for you.
Crown the winner
At the end of your chosen number of questions, Shalose displays the full leaderboard and announces the winning team automatically.
Tips for a Great Pub Quiz Night
- Keep rounds to ten questions each, with a short break in between — it gives people time to get drinks and keeps energy levels high.
- Start each round easy and increase difficulty through the round. It gives everyone a confidence boost early and builds tension toward the end.
- Have a tiebreaker question ready. A closest-wins number question works perfectly — year of an event, population of a country, or the length of a river.
- Announce the running scores after each round, not just at the end. It keeps losing teams motivated to catch up and adds drama.
- Mix in a true/false round for speed — it gives a change of pace and lets quieter team members shine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Shalose in an actual pub?
Yes. Shalose runs entirely in your phone's browser. Once the page has loaded it works without a persistent connection. The quizmaster reads questions aloud from their screen — no projector or printed sheets needed.
How many teams can play?
The built-in scorecard supports up to four teams. For larger events, use Quickfire mode to display questions and manage scoring separately on paper or a whiteboard.
How long should a pub quiz last?
Most pub quizzes run for 60 to 90 minutes, covering 40 to 60 questions across four to six rounds. For a casual evening we suggest three to four categories at ten questions each, giving you a solid 45-minute quiz with natural breaks between rounds.
Is Shalose really free?
Completely free. No subscription, no credits, no account required. Play as many questions as you like across any categories.
Are the answers guaranteed to be correct?
Every question in the Shalose bank has been hand-verified for accuracy before being added. The questions cover facts as they stood at the time of writing.
